How to Investigate Sources in ChatGPT Answers
An answer with source links gives you evidence to inspect, but it does not expose the full process used to select those sources. Start with the visible response and avoid presenting an assumed ranking formula as fact.
Record the answer context
Save the question, date and available mode or search settings. Note whether sources were provided and whether the prompt followed a longer conversation. Results from different contexts are not directly interchangeable.
Check what each source supports
Open the linked page and find the passage relevant to the answer. Check its date, qualifications and limitations. A source can support one sentence without validating the entire response. If a claim is unsupported, record the uncertainty.
Improve your own reference pages
Make current product facts and detailed explanations easy to find through internal links. Resolve contradictions in pages you control and provide evidence for material claims. Those changes help readers verify information, even when you cannot know whether ChatGPT will select the page.
