How to Measure AI Visibility

Measure a defined set of questions under recorded conditions. A useful baseline explains who the questions represent, which engines were sampled and how each metric was counted.

Define the scope

Choose a buyer task, a representative prompt set and the engines available for your study. Record language, location and search settings where supported. Separate branded questions from unbranded discovery and note incomplete runs.

Calculate distinct metrics

A mention rate can be calculated as answers naming the brand divided by completed sampled answers. A citation rate can count answers linking to your domain. For share of voice, define the competitor set and mention-count denominator explicitly. These rates describe different events.

Add context before interpreting a trend

In an illustrative sample, 12 of 40 answers mentioning a brand is 30%. Changing the prompt set can change that rate without changing the brand's broader visibility. Show raw counts, dates and engine-level results. Review the answer wording when recommendations or factual accuracy matter.
