AI Search vs Google Search: How to Compare Results
Google Search includes both links and AI experiences, so the distinction is not simply "Google versus AI." Compare the specific experience, question and outcome your customers use.
Identify the experience being measured
A conventional result list, an AI-generated overview and an assistant conversation can present information differently. Record what was actually observed. A named brand, a linked source and a clicked search result are different events.
Keep reporting definitions clear
Use Search Console to examine Google search impressions and clicks. Google reports its AI-feature traffic within overall Web search reporting. Separately sampled assistant answers can reveal descriptions and citations, but they cannot reproduce every customer's search session.
Improve the journey after discovery
Ensure the destination page answers the question, loads well on a phone and offers a relevant next step. A visitor checking an implementation detail needs documentation before a sales pitch. Track meaningful outcomes and avoid attributing a traffic change to AI without a wider diagnosis.
Sources and further reading
Google's guidance for AI features explains the requirements for its own search experiences. For a worked process, read the related practical guide. Apply engine-specific documentation to that engine, rather than treating it as a rule for every assistant.
