AEO vs SEO: What Changes in Your Content and Reporting?
Compare AEO and SEO by buyer questions, page structure, technical requirements and measurement, then decide which work belongs in your next sprint.
What the terms mean in practice
SEO is search engine optimization: helping search engines access and understand useful pages and helping people find them. AEO means answer engine optimization, a broad industry term for improving how information can be used in answers. GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on generated responses. Their boundaries overlap.
Google's guidance for AI search features says "established SEO practices remain relevant." There is no separate set of AI-specific technical requirements or special schema that a site must add for those features.
Other assistants have their own behavior and product modes. A result observed in one engine should not be presented as a rule for all of them.
Compare the work, not the labels
| Area | Common SEO work | Additional answer-focused checks |
|---|---|---|
| Customer research | Search queries and page intent | Natural questions and follow-up constraints |
| Content | Helpful explanations and relevant evidence | Whether answers describe the business accurately |
| Technical access | Crawling, indexing, canonicals, mobile usability | Whether important explanations are accessible as text |
| Competition | Pages visible for target searches | Brands and sources appearing in sampled answers |
| Measurement | Impressions, clicks and website outcomes | Mentions, citations and answer context |
These are overlapping activities, not mutually exclusive job descriptions. A well-written comparison page may help both a search visitor and someone checking an AI-generated shortlist.
Change a page because a reader needs it
Consider a software page that says "integrates with your favorite tools" but never names the supported systems. A buyer cannot check compatibility. An assistant may also lack a clear source for that detail.
The useful improvement is a current integration list, links to setup instructions and honest limitations. Repeating "best software for AI search" would not answer the question.
Before writing a new article, check whether an existing page should contain the answer. Keep related facts together and link to the detailed documentation. Give examples, explain prerequisites and avoid copying the same paragraph across many pages.
Keep the metrics separate
A search ranking, a brand mention and a citation measure different events. A tool can name your company without linking to your site. It can cite your documentation without recommending your product. An observed visit can arrive without converting.
For example, suppose your brand appears in 12 of 40 sampled answers. That is a 30% mention rate for that sample. It does not mean 30% of buyers saw your brand or that you own 30% of the market.
Maintain a stable prompt set and record which engines and settings were used. Show the raw counts alongside percentages. Add qualitative review when the wording matters, such as an inaccurate statement about pricing.
Decide what gets attention first
Fix obstacles that affect real users before expanding a monitoring program: broken product pages, missing buying information, inaccessible mobile navigation and incorrect business details.
Then choose a small answer-focused experiment. A comparison page with outdated facts is a better starting point than a plan to rewrite the entire site for an assumed ranking factor.
There is no universal budget split between AEO and SEO. Use your current acquisition mix, customer questions and capacity to decide. If your site cannot measure enquiries reliably, improve that before treating a visibility chart as business impact.
Use one review process
Bring search and answer observations into the same editorial meeting. Record the customer question, relevant URL, issue, proposed edit, owner and review date. Keep the evidence available so someone else can challenge the interpretation.
Success may be a clearer page, fewer support questions, more qualified enquiries or a correction in sampled answers. State which outcome you actually observed. For troubleshooting declining clicks, use the organic traffic diagnosis guide; for definitions and setup, start with the AEO guide.
