What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Understand GEO, how it relates to SEO and AEO, and how to measure mentions and citations without confusing visibility with business results.
Where the term comes from
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is work intended to improve how a brand or source appears in AI-generated answers. It includes making information accessible, correcting unclear or outdated content, and measuring what assistants say about a business.
The term describes a goal. It does not name a single accepted ranking system, certification, or guaranteed route into an AI answer.
The research paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization introduced a framework for studying source visibility in generative answers. Its experimental results depend on the benchmark and systems tested. They should not be read as a promised uplift for a live website.
That distinction matters when a guide turns a research result into an instruction such as "add statistics to increase citations." An accurate, relevant statistic can help a reader. An unrelated number added for a supposed algorithmic benefit makes the page worse.
How GEO relates to SEO and AEO
SEO concerns visibility in search results. AEO is commonly used for work on answer-based discovery. GEO focuses on generated answers. The terms overlap, and vendors use them differently, so agree on the actual deliverables before buying a service.
| Work | Useful deliverable | Evidence to review |
|---|---|---|
| Technical SEO | Accessible, indexable public pages | HTTP responses and rendered HTML |
| Content improvement | Accurate answers to buyer questions | Page revisions and source checks |
| AI visibility measurement | Repeatable question sets | Saved answers and cited URLs |
| Business reporting | Qualified visits and leads | Analytics and sales outcomes |
A proposal that sells "GEO authority" without defining what will change or how it will be measured is difficult to evaluate.
What to measure first
Choose questions relevant to your product and record results by engine and language. Define each metric before comparing tools. For a simple mention rate, divide valid answers mentioning the brand by valid answers reviewed. State how failed or empty runs are handled.
For illustration, 12 mentions in 40 valid answers is a 30% mention rate for that sample. It is not a finding about 30% of all customer searches. If you add easier branded questions next month, the score may rise without any change in unprompted discovery.
Keep citations separate from mentions. An answer can name your business without linking to it, or cite your educational article without recommending your product.
A practical first project
Pick one product or service. Collect recurring questions from sales, support, and search data. Review the pages a prospective customer would use to answer those questions. Fix missing facts, unclear limitations, and broken links before commissioning more articles.
Save a baseline of AI answers for the same questions. After publishing substantive changes, review subsequent results and record other relevant changes, such as a product launch or a new third-party review. You are building an investigation history, not a before-and-after proof from two screenshots.
What GEO cannot establish
A monitoring tool cannot see every private conversation with an assistant. A crawler-access check cannot guarantee indexing. A citation does not guarantee a visit, and a visit does not guarantee a sale. Those are different stages with different evidence.
Google's guidance for AI features says its established SEO practices remain relevant and that no special AI markup is required. Treat claims that a new file or schema type guarantees inclusion with care.
Decide whether the work is useful
At the end of a review period, ask three questions: is our public information more accurate, can we explain the answers we observed, and have qualified enquiries changed? A useful GEO program can answer each separately.
