Answer Engine Optimization in India: A Practical Guide
Plan AI visibility work for Indian audiences with local buyer questions, useful regional content, accurate business details, and a measurable review process.
Start with the customers you actually serve
Choose a specific audience before you choose prompts. A payroll provider selling to a finance team has different questions to answer from a furniture shop serving one city. Write down the product, buyer, service area, budget constraints and common objections.
Use anonymised sales questions and support requests as inputs. Do buyers ask about invoices, migration, delivery areas, installation or local support? Those details make a question useful. Adding "India" to a generic prompt is not a substitute for research.
For example, "payroll software for a 40-person company with employees in two states" is a clearer starting point than "best software India." Only include capabilities that your business actually provides.
Build a small, balanced prompt set
Separate discovery questions from brand checks. A prompt containing your brand name tests a different job from a prompt asking which providers to consider.
| Buyer task | Example question | What to review |
|---|---|---|
| Discover options | Which inventory tools suit a small retailer in India? | Named products and selection criteria |
| Check suitability | Does this tool support multiple store locations? | Accuracy and supporting pages |
| Compare providers | How do these two tools differ on onboarding? | Evidence for each comparison |
| Verify the business | Where can I find this company's support details? | Consistent, current contact information |
These are illustrative prompts. Replace them with your customers' language. Record the engine, date, language and location settings where available. Keep a baseline set unchanged so later comparisons mean something.
Choose languages from customer evidence
Start with languages your team can support well. If customers ask questions in Hindi or a mix of Hindi and English, test that wording separately from an English translation. Have a fluent reviewer check whether both prompts express the same intent.
A translated page should be useful on its own: correct terminology, working navigation, local examples and current product information. Do not publish dozens of near-identical city pages with only the location name changed. A local page earns its place when it explains a real service area, team, process or customer need.
If you publish separate language URLs, have a developer check the canonical and language annotations against the actual versions available. Do not label an English page as a translation that does not exist.
Make buying information easy to verify
Put material details where a reader expects them. Pricing pages should make the billing currency and billing period clear. Service pages should explain where the business operates and how delivery or onboarding works. Contact information should agree across your site and profiles you manage.
If a claim needs evidence, provide it. A customer example can describe the problem, work completed and outcome with permission. A product capability is stronger with documentation or an annotated screenshot than a paragraph calling it "best in class."
Keep sensitive or regulated guidance within the expertise of a qualified reviewer. Regional relevance does not justify guessing legal or compliance requirements.
Check technical access before adding more content
Inspect important pages on a phone and in their initial HTML. Confirm that the main explanation is readable, links work and pages intended for search can be crawled and indexed. Check image loading and forms on a narrow screen.
Google's AI features guidance says existing SEO practices remain relevant for its AI search features. It does not require a special AI file or special schema. That guidance concerns Google; avoid extending it into a promise about every assistant.
Report the results by audience
Review English and regional-language samples separately. Report brand mentions, linked citations and observed website referrals as different measures. A mention is not a visit, and a visit is not a qualified lead.
Keep a change log alongside the results: page edited, date, reason and expected benefit. If a prompt starts mentioning your brand after an edit, repeat the observation before crediting the change. Other sources and engine behavior may also have changed.
A useful first review ends with a short list of decisions: correct an inaccurate product detail, answer a recurring buyer question, improve a difficult mobile page, or collect better evidence. See the AI visibility audit guide for a wider review checklist.
