How to Audit the Brands an AI Assistant Recommends
Audit an AI-generated brand shortlist: capture the question, inspect recommendations and linked sources, check accuracy, and identify useful content fixes.
Capture the question and context
Save the exact wording, engine, date and any settings you can see. Note whether the answer used web search or supplied citations. A follow-up question in a long conversation may produce a different answer from the same question in a fresh conversation.
Choose a buying task your company genuinely serves. "Best accounting software" is broad. "Accounting software for a small agency that invoices clients in two currencies" supplies criteria you can evaluate.
Keep discovery prompts separate from brand questions. Asking an assistant about your own company establishes whether it can describe you, not whether it would recommend you without being prompted.
Read the reasons beside each recommendation
Do not stop at whether your name appears. Check what the answer claims about each product and whether those claims matter to the buyer.
| Observation | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Your brand is absent | Whether the stated selection criteria fit your product |
| Your brand is listed inaccurately | Current documentation for the disputed fact |
| A competitor is recommended for a feature | Whether its cited evidence supports that feature |
| A source link is present | Whether it supports the sentence beside it |
| No source is shown | Which claims can be independently verified |
A numbered list is not necessarily a ranking. If the assistant has not explained an order, avoid reporting "position one" as though it were a search rank with a stable meaning.
Open the linked sources
Read the relevant passage, publication or update date, and context. A citation can point to a broad category page rather than a source that supports every statement. A link alone does not establish accuracy.
Separate your own pages from third-party pages. You can correct your documentation directly. For another publisher, the appropriate action may be to request correction of an error with evidence; paying for or manufacturing praise is not a reliable editorial strategy.
If sources disagree, make the current product facts easy to verify on an authoritative page you maintain. Explain version, plan or geographic limitations rather than making a broader claim than the evidence supports.
Turn the audit into a specific page task
Suppose the answer says your tool lacks an integration that you now support. Check whether your integration page exists, can be reached from the product navigation and clearly states what the integration does. Add setup details and a current screenshot if useful.
That edit resolves an information problem for readers. It may also give search systems better source material, but you cannot guarantee that the assistant will retrieve it or change its answer.
If your product does not meet the buyer's requirements, record that as a fit issue. A content rewrite should not imply a capability the product does not have.
Repeat the check without rewriting the experiment
Rerun the same questions over time and keep the original answers. Record changes to your pages, your product and visible engine settings. Compare like with like before describing a trend.
A result can change for reasons outside your work, including changes in other websites or the engine. Report an observed improvement as an observation unless you have evidence supporting a causal explanation.
For teams tracking many questions, campaigns organized by buyer intent can make review easier. The same discipline applies to a spreadsheet: a stable question, an inspectable answer and a clear next action.
What a useful report contains
Keep the report short enough to use. Include the question, observed answer, source links, accuracy check, affected page and proposed action. Add an owner and a date for rechecking.
Avoid presenting one shortlist as a market-wide result. Your report describes a sample of answers under recorded conditions. The engine selection explainer covers what can be observed and what remains uncertain.
