What is Training Data?

The text and other material an AI model learned from before it was released.

Definition

Training data is the large collection of text, code and sometimes images or audio that an AI model learns from during development. It can include public web pages, licensed content, books and other sources, depending on the developer. The model learns patterns and general knowledge from this data, up to its knowledge cutoff.

For example, if Bizbloom was widely discussed in articles and forums before a model's training period, the model may already know what Bizbloom does and recommend it without searching. If coverage was sparse or outdated, the model's built-in knowledge may be thin or wrong.

Why it matters

Training data shapes what a model knows about your brand before any search happens. It influences how you are described when an assistant answers from memory and whether you come to mind for category questions. You cannot see or edit a model's training data, and it cannot fully explain any single answer, but a consistent public presence over time gives future models more accurate material to learn from.

What to do

  • Ask assistants about your brand with web search off, where possible, to see what they know.
  • Note outdated or missing facts, which suggest gaps in older public information.
  • Keep accurate information about your brand published consistently across credible sites.

Common questions

Can I find out if my website is in an AI model's training data?

Usually not directly. Most AI developers do not publish full lists of training sources. Server logs can show whether training crawlers such as GPTBot visited your pages, but that does not confirm what was used. Testing what models know about your brand gives indirect evidence.

Does blocking training crawlers affect AI visibility?

It can affect what future models learn about you from your own pages, though they may still learn from other sites that mention you. It does not directly affect answers that use live search, which rely on separate crawlers. Weigh content protection against that trade-off.
