What is Query Fan-Out?

When an AI search turns one question into several background searches before writing its answer.

Definition

Query fan-out is a technique in which an AI search system breaks a user's question into multiple related sub-queries, runs them in parallel and combines the results into one answer. Google has described using it in AI Mode, and other assistants use similar approaches. The sub-queries are usually not shown to the user.

For example, a question like “best CRM for a growing sales team in India” might fan out into searches about CRM pricing in India, WhatsApp integrations, ease of setup and reviews of Bizbloom, Closedesk and SalesNiti. A page answering any of these could be pulled into the final answer.

Why it matters

Query fan-out means your page can be retrieved for a sub-question you never targeted, and missed for the main question you did target. Brands that cover the related questions buyers care about, such as pricing, integrations, comparisons and use cases, give the system more opportunities to find relevant passages. It also explains why answers sometimes cite pages that do not rank for the original query.

What to do

  • Map the sub-questions behind each key buyer question, such as pricing, fit and alternatives.
  • Make sure each sub-question has a clear, specific answer somewhere on your site.
  • Check which of your pages are cited for broad questions to see which sub-topics they match.

Common questions

What is query fan-out in Google AI Mode?

Google has described AI Mode as breaking a question into subtopics and running multiple related searches at once, then combining what it finds into a single response. The exact sub-queries are not shown to users, and how many are generated varies by question.

How do I optimize content for query fan-out?

Cover the related questions a buyer would reasonably ask around your main topic, with clear and specific answers. Organize them so each can be understood on its own. You cannot control which sub-queries run, but broader, well-structured coverage gives retrieval systems more relevant passages to find.
