What is Natural Language Processing (NLP)?

The field of computing that reads, interprets and generates human language.

Definition

Natural language processing, or NLP, is the area of computer science concerned with enabling machines to work with human language. It covers tasks such as identifying entities in text, understanding intent, classifying topics, summarizing documents and generating replies. Large language models are one of the most visible results of NLP research.

For example, when someone searches “CRM that works on WhatsApp for small teams,” NLP helps the system recognize that the query is about CRM software, a messaging integration and team size. It can then match pages about Bizbloom's WhatsApp features even if they use different wording.

Why it matters

NLP is how search engines and AI assistants work out what your content means, not just which words it contains. Pages that state clearly who a product is for, what it does and how it compares are easier for these systems to interpret correctly. Keyword stuffing does little for systems that analyze meaning. Writing plainly for people is usually the best way to be understood by machines as well.

What to do

  • Name entities clearly: your brand, products, features and the audiences they serve.
  • Write in complete, specific sentences rather than strings of keywords.
  • Use consistent terms for the same product or feature across your site.

Common questions

How does NLP affect SEO?

Search engines use NLP to understand queries and pages by meaning, entities and intent rather than exact word matches. This means pages can rank for questions phrased differently from their text, and repeating keywords matters less than covering the topic clearly and accurately.

Is NLP the same as a large language model?

No. NLP is the broader field of computing that deals with human language. Large language models are one type of NLP system, trained on large amounts of text to generate and interpret language. Many NLP techniques, such as entity recognition, existed long before LLMs.
