What is E-E-A-T?

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness: a framework from Google's search quality rater guidelines.

Definition

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness. It comes from the guidelines Google gives to human quality raters, who evaluate search results to help Google assess its systems. Trust is described as the most important element, with the other three supporting it. E-E-A-T is not a single score or a direct ranking factor.

For example, an Aarvi Skin article on managing acne-prone skin shows experience and expertise when it is written or reviewed by a named dermatologist, includes first-hand product testing and cites sources. An anonymous article making the same claims gives readers less reason to trust it.

Why it matters

E-E-A-T describes what makes content credible to a careful reader, and those qualities also help AI systems. Named authors, clear sourcing, first-hand evidence and accurate claims make a page easier to trust and easier to cite correctly. For topics where mistakes can cause harm, these signals matter even more. Assistants do not publish how they weigh credibility, but showing real expertise is rarely wasted effort for brand visibility.

What to do

  • Add named authors with relevant credentials and link to their bio pages.
  • Cite primary sources and show first-hand testing, data or experience where you have it.
  • Keep your about page, contact details and editorial policies easy to find.

Common questions

Is E-E-A-T a Google ranking factor?

Not as a single measurable factor. E-E-A-T is a concept in Google's quality rater guidelines, used by human reviewers to evaluate result quality. Google has said its systems use a mix of signals that align with E-E-A-T, but there is no E-E-A-T score to optimize directly.

Does E-E-A-T matter for AI answers?

The underlying qualities do. AI assistants do not publish how they weigh credibility, and behavior varies by system. Still, pages with named experts, clear sourcing and accurate claims are easier to trust and quote correctly. Those same qualities help the buyers who click through from an answer.
