Definition
AI Overviews are summaries generated by Google that appear within Google Search results for some queries. They combine information from multiple web pages into a short answer and usually include links to the sources used. Whether one appears depends on the query, and the same query can show different results over time.
For example, a search for “how to choose a CRM for a small sales team” might show an AI Overview that summarizes selection criteria and links to guides. If a Pipekart guide is linked and Bizbloom's is not, Pipekart gets the visibility at the top of the page.
Why it matters
AI Overviews sit above traditional results, so they are often the first thing a searcher reads. A brand can rank well organically and still be absent from the overview, or be summarized in a way it would not choose. Because overviews appear for some queries and not others, the only reliable way to know your position is to check the specific questions your buyers search, and to recheck them, since results change.
What to do
- List the high-value queries your buyers search and check which ones show an AI Overview.
- Record which sources are linked and whether your brand is named in the summary.
- Recheck the same queries regularly, since overviews appear, disappear and change over time.
Common questions
Can I opt out of Google AI Overviews?
Google provides controls such as the nosnippet directive and related meta tags that limit how page content is shown in search features. These controls also affect regular snippets, so they carry trade-offs. Review Google's current documentation before applying them, since the options and their effects can change.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks to websites?
They can, for some queries, because the searcher may get enough information from the summary. The effect varies by query type and industry. Compare impressions, clicks and click-through rate for the same pages over the same periods to see whether your own traffic has changed where overviews appear.
