What is Zero-Click Search?

Searches that end without any click — now the majority outcome, and the defining condition AI-era marketing must build for.

Definition

A zero-click search ends on the results page — the user gets their answer from a snippet, panel, or AI Overview and never visits a website. Similarweb measured zero-click share rising from 56% to 69% of Google searches between May 2024 and May 2025; on queries with AI Overviews it reaches an estimated 83%.

Why it matters

Zero-click isn't a bug to fix but the environment to build for. The strategy shift: win the impression even when the click never comes — be the brand named in the answer, the cited source, the entity the panel describes — because those exposures shape shortlists that later convert as direct and branded traffic. And fight for the clicks that remain: they're fewer but far more valuable, which is exactly what AI-referral conversion data (2.5–5× organic) demonstrates.

Frequently asked

How do I measure marketing success in a zero-click world?

Add answer-layer metrics to click metrics: AI mention rate and share of voice, Overview citations, branded-search and direct-traffic trends, and conversion rate of remaining visits. Clicks alone now systematically understate your visibility.

Is zero-click bad for all businesses?

Least bad for brands, worst for pure ad-monetized publishers. If your model is being chosen (not being visited), answer-layer presence can substitute for much of the lost traffic — if you measure and optimize it deliberately.
