AI Overviews are the AI-generated summaries Google places above traditional organic results. Powered by Gemini models, they synthesize an answer from multiple sources and show a small set of citation links. Industry tracking in 2026 puts them on roughly 48% of Google searches, reaching about 1.5 billion users a month.
For website owners, they change the physics of search: Pew Research's analysis of 68,000 real queries found users clicked a result only 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, versus 15% without one — and only 1% of AI Overviews produced a click on a cited source.
Why it matters
Ahrefs measured a 58% reduction in CTR to the top organic result when an AI Overview is present (February 2026) — up from 34.5% in April 2025. You can lose half your clicks while your rankings stay flat. The strategic response is twofold: become a cited source inside the Overview, and measure brand mentions rather than clicks alone.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
You can use nosnippet or max-snippet rules to limit inclusion, but this also removes you from the answer surface most users read. Most brands instead compete to be cited inside the Overview.
Do AI Overviews use the same ranking as organic search?
Partially. They draw on Google's index and ranking signals, but citation selection differs — pages outside the top 10 are regularly cited, and query fan-out means Google issues multiple background searches to build one Overview.
