Definition
An AI citation is a source link an assistant shows to support part of its answer — the footnotes in Perplexity, the link cards in ChatGPT Search, the cited sites in Google AI Overviews. Citations are how retrieval-based assistants attribute the material they synthesize.
Citation selection follows different rules than ranking: analyses in 2025–26 found only ~10% of ChatGPT's citations for a query overlap Google's top-10 organic results, and the top 20 domains capture about 66% of all AI citations — a steep concentration curve favoring sources models treat as authoritative.
Why it matters
Citations are the only click path out of most AI answers, and they carry outsized trust: 45% of software buyers say a citation from a review site is the single most confidence-inspiring element in an AI answer (G2, 2026). The Princeton GEO study showed content with statistics, quotations, and cited sources earns more inclusion — machines cite pages that themselves cite well.
