What is Organic CTR?
The share of searchers who click a result. Collapsing where AI summaries appear — the metric that explains 'rankings up, traffic down.'
Definition
Organic click-through rate is the percentage of searchers who click a given organic result. It was the reliable bridge between rankings and traffic — a bridge AI answer surfaces are dismantling.
The 2025–26 measurements are stark: Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut CTR to the top result by 58% (Feb 2026, up from 34.5% in April 2025); Seer Interactive measured organic CTR falling 61% (1.76% → 0.61%) across 25.1M impressions when an Overview was present; Pew found clicks dropping from 15% to 8% of queries with AI summaries.
Why it matters
CTR collapse is why 'we still rank #1 but traffic is down 40%' became the defining complaint of 2025–26 SEO. The metric to watch is no longer rank but presence in the answer layer — and the traffic that remains is higher-intent, which is why AI-referred visitors convert at multiples of organic averages. Report impressions, mentions, and citations alongside clicks, or the dashboard will keep telling a misleading story.
Frequently asked
Why is my traffic down if rankings are stable?
Odds are AI Overviews now answer your queries above your listing. Check which of your top queries trigger Overviews and whether you're cited inside them — that's the new position zero.
Is high CTR still achievable anywhere?
Yes — transactional, navigational, and local queries still click through at healthy rates, and cited sources inside AI answers capture the remaining high-intent clicks.
