What is Deep Research?
Agentic AI modes that browse dozens of sources over minutes to produce long-form reports — a growing, high-stakes surface for B2B visibility.
Definition
Deep research modes (offered by OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and Perplexity) are agentic workflows where the assistant autonomously plans a research task, issues dozens of searches, reads large numbers of pages, and compiles a cited long-form report. A single deep-research run can touch far more sources than a normal chat answer.
They are increasingly used for exactly the queries B2B vendors care about: market landscapes, vendor comparisons, and build-vs-buy analyses.
Why it matters
When a buyer's “shortlist memo” is written by an agent, the sources that agent reads become your sales collateral. Deep research agents reward the same things as other retrieval systems — accessible pages, corroborated claims, real data — but punish thin content harder, because they compare many sources side by side. Being absent from a deep-research report on your category is a silent lost deal.
Frequently asked
How is deep research different from normal AI search?
Scale and autonomy: instead of 1–2 retrievals, an agent performs a multi-step plan across dozens of pages, cross-checks claims, and writes a structured report. Inconsistencies between your site and third-party sources become visible.
Can I tell when deep research agents visit my site?
Server logs show the crawler user-agents and often characteristic burst patterns — many related pages fetched in one short window.
