What is Brand Mention?
Any reference to a brand inside an AI-generated answer — with or without a link. The core unit of AI visibility measurement.
Definition
A brand mention is any instance of an AI assistant naming your brand in an answer — recommending it, comparing it, describing it, or listing it. Unlike traditional SEO, where value flows through links, AI answers often name brands with no link at all, which makes mentions (not clicks) the primary unit of measurement.
Mentions have qualities worth tracking: position (first named vs. last), sentiment (recommended vs. cautioned against), accuracy (does the assistant describe you correctly?), and context (which prompts trigger you at all).
Why it matters
G2's 2026 research found 69% of B2B buyers changed which vendor they chose based on AI chatbot guidance, and a third bought from a vendor they had never heard of before the AI named it. A mention in the right answer is a sales call you never had to book. Because mentions are invisible to web analytics, brands that don't track them are flying blind in the channel shaping decisions.
Frequently asked
Are unlinked mentions worth anything?
Yes — in AI search they are the main event. Assistants frequently describe and recommend brands without linking. The mention shapes the buyer's shortlist even when no click ever happens.
How do I increase brand mentions in AI answers?
Models favor claims corroborated across independent sources: review platforms, trade press, comparison articles, and communities. A claim that exists only on your own site is largely discounted.
