What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
The practice of structuring content so that answer engines — AI assistants and featured-snippet systems — extract and present it as the direct answer.
Definition
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of formatting and structuring content so machines can lift it directly into an answer. It predates the LLM era — featured snippets and voice assistants were the first “answer engines” — but AI assistants have made it central: the answer, not the link list, is now the product.
Practically, AEO means leading with the answer (definition or number in the first sentence), using question-form headings, keeping one idea per passage so retrieval systems can quote it cleanly, and backing claims with data that models consider citation-worthy.
Why it matters
Retrieval systems pull passages, not pages. A page that buries its answer in paragraph seven rarely gets quoted. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) found that adding quotations, statistics, and citations measurably increased a source's inclusion in generated answers — evidence that answer-shaped writing is rewarded by generative engines.
Frequently asked
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap heavily. AEO focuses on formatting content to be extractable as answers; GEO (generative engine optimization) is the broader discipline covering entity building, third-party corroboration, and technical access for AI crawlers. Most teams treat AEO as a subset of GEO.
Does AEO hurt traditional SEO?
No — the tactics (clear structure, direct answers, schema) tend to help both. The main tension is philosophical: AEO accepts that many impressions end without a click and optimizes for being the cited source anyway.
