Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the discipline of increasing how often and how favorably AI systems mention and cite your brand. The term comes from the 2023 Princeton/Georgia Tech paper “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” (peer-reviewed at KDD 2024), which tested 10,000 queries and showed that content changes — adding statistics, quotations, and citations — measurably increased a source's visibility in generated answers.

GEO spans three layers: technical access (AI crawlers can fetch and parse you), content (answer-shaped, data-rich, quotable), and off-site corroboration (reviews, trade press, communities echoing your claims).

Why it matters
